So let’s remind ourselves of the very real possibility that the Arendelle household were to some minimum degree aware of the separation between Elsa and Anna, with varying degrees of knowledge as to the exact reason why.
Pay attention to the bishop.
The first gif. The way he discreetly, but sympathetically, reminds Elsa of her gloves since the ceremony requires her to hold the symbols of her station with her bare hands. It’s not necessarily that he knows why they’re so crucial to her, simply that they are.
The penultimate gif. The way he calmly, stoically, acquiesces to Elsa’s hurried, nay, panicked return of the items and the repossession of her gloves. The way he glances ever so briefly at her as she pulls the gloves back onto her hands. All without breaking his stride.
He may not necessarily know why she acts the way she does, but he does know how important it is to her. And he does his level best to cushion her apprehension, even in the middle of this formal practice.
Bonus Elsa appreciation! (read: heartwrenching analysis of the minutiae of her body language.)
The fourth gif. The slight exhale slump of her shoulders as she pulls the second glove off her hands. She’s left her comfort zone and she knows it.
The fifth gif. The fifth gif. Her hands are legitimately trembling as she reaches for the spire and orb.
Sixth gif. The forced inhale, the raise of her shoulders, her jaw setting and her lips a line of concentration.
Seventh gif. The minute relaxation in her features. The little shift in her eyebrows and the corners of her lips. “I can do this. I am able to do this. It works.” The pride that swells within her that she might yet be able to be the queen she hopes she can be for her people. Friendly reminder that she’s wearing her late mother’s hairstyle for this event.
Eighth gif. She’s steeling herself anew now that she realized it’s still about to slip away from her. Look at the orb and the spire. They are visibly trembling. This isn’t the standard muscle tension anymore. This is Elsa fighting with every ounce of her composure not to screw this up. The way her shoulders go up again, her mouth tightens back into that strained line.
Ninth gif. As soon as her gloves are back on, as soon as she turns back around and clasps her hands in front of her, as soon as she’s back in her comfort zone, her shoulders go down and her face settles into the mask of royal perfection she’s disciplined herself into for thirteen years. A light, kind, queenly smile to her loyal subjects. She’s back to her status quo.
Say whatever you want about the character designs, but my god, this is character animation on a whole new level.
